Dr Andrea Shepperson wanted to provide a change from hotel based training venues - a place to step out of busy practice life where dentists can relax, clear their heads and be surrounded by nature. Built on 10 acres in the heart of Church Bay, Waiheke Island, the Centre has panoramic vistas of the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland City. Surrounded by established New Zealand native bush, birdsong, vineyards and only 5 minutes drive from the Fullers ferry it is a unique venue which is the perfect location for recalibration, creative thinking and new strategies.
The venue hosts a large auditorium with a wide screen state of the art LED display, generous seating and space for hands-on facilities, natural light and an indoor/outdoor breakout area for hospitality. There are opportunities to walk into the bush at breaks and experience New Zealand native flora and fauna - tui, kereru, parrots, pukeko, fantails and kaka who visit in summer from Great Barrier Island.
The Centre is within walking distance of Cable Bay Winery, and across the road from the biennial Sculpture On The Gulf walkway. A 5 minute drive to Oneroa - Waiheke's main retail and hospitality centre, it is conveniently located at the Western end of the island.
Waiheke Island has an abundance of food and wine, and the centre uses talented local chefs to showcase the best of Island cuisine and flair. All meals are provided, and courses run on a Friday and Saturday, allowing participants to extend their stay to embrace island life.
The Shepperson Education Training Centre began construction in 2018. Sean and Andrea Shepperson used Box Living to construct a bespoke design, with flexible spaces, and Stewart Harris from Macintosh Harris designed the interiors. Sam Walle, lighting architect of Dark Arts Lighting, came up with innovative track lighting for the inverted ceiling. Designed to replicate the outstetched wings of a bird in the roof line, it embraced the native birdlife that is abundant in surrounding native bush. Samsung microLED wall panels provide a 4m wide screen with optimum peak brightness in such a light space. AV installation by Island Sound, video conferencing capability and multiple table and seating configurations provide flexible options for meetings. The Centre can also be used for visitor accommodation, when not available for meetings.
